History
In 1994, I coached a recreational team in the fall.
Several of the players expressed a desire to play indoor, and so I managed and coached a
rag-tag bunch of Under-15 players wearing tie-dye T-shirts playing "Futsal" at
Hampshire College.
The following year, we moved our team to a true indoor
facility, Games and Lanes in Agawam, Mass. Through our 3 years there, we were very
competitive considering many teams were made up of older varsity/JV players while our side
had a number of recreational players.
In 1997, the Valley SC had a Freshman division team win its
regular season, and then win the playoffs on an overtime goal in a very close game against
an Agawam team. Prior to that, the best finish a Valley SC team had accomplished was
a 2nd place finish having been beaten in the final by Bruno's of Agawam, a team made up of
mostly varsity players (a team that went undefeated at Games and Lanes over a 3 session
streak).
In 1998, the club moved to All Sport Soccer in Northampton, Mass., a brand
new facility. And after a 5-2 session record, the squad pulled off a 5-4 upset of a
Holyoke team - ironically on a goal in overtime.
Over the years, the club has faced many other teams from
Agawam, Amherst, Hampshire Regional (Hampshire United PVJSL), Holyoke, Holyoke Catholic, Hopkins, Northampton (High School and a MAPLE team - Western United), Southwick and Westfield - and of late it seems we are viewed as
the chief rival of a new, younger Easthampton team. We have had excellent players
from Easthampton, Northampton, Agawam, Holyoke, Chicopee, South Hadley, and Gateway.
And we've tried to maintain an attitude of fun and sportsmanship - while also
working to improve as a team.
The club has come a long way since its inception - what
feels like so long ago. And I have hopeful expectations for where it may go.
2/1/2001: Sadly, I had to relocate from Blustery Massachusetts to
sunny Florida, and thus the VSC as it was is no more. I may start a new club down here, but
I would be the first to admit that it won't be quite the same, not to mention my club teams
played indoor mostly, and there just are not indoor seasons down here....
