For a look at the standings at All Sport Soccer
Feb. 2001: After several great years, I've had to hang up my coaches whistle.
I have moved to Florida, and thus the VSC is technically no more. I do hope that I've made some impact on
the players that I coached. I've got a lot of memories of some great games, talents and individual efforts.
Who could forget some of Adam Eckerts goals, or Chris Solano scoring one with his back to goal... I can
only hope that these young people go on and develop their skill to the fullest - the only thing that will
hold these guys back is themselves.
Feb. 1999: A new millenuim dawns, and I realize I've missed
filling in info for some time. The indoor season started in November, and we did very well. We lost
only 2 matches, and it turned out that those were the teams that battled for the session championship.
A bounce here or there and we could have been right in there. But at the streach of the 2nd session
we find ourselves in control of our own destiny. Western United has the top slot nearly sewn up.
And just today we defeated Agawam to take sole possesion of 2nd. As long as we stay the course, we should
hold that slot through to the end of the session. And since we now own the tiebreaker with Agawam (and they
are the only team with a realistic chance to catch us) it just comes down to meeting expectations.
Other teams new this year: Hampshire United, Northampton (who had 2 teams inthe 1st session), and Hopkins.
Holyoke Rose was back in the first session, as was Amherts United. And Easthampton Omni was back too.
Apr. 1999: Well, another year done. This year we have
several longtime players who we wish luck in future endeavors as they will not be eligable
for next year. It seems as though I will have lost a full squad - thus a rebuilding
process begins. I'm already scoping out players for next years team, with an eye to return
to the same play level we were at this year. Time will tell. Also I hope to find a sponsor
over this summer, just so I can get some quality jerseys and lower the fee's paid per
player. I do have to thank the kids who played this year as it will be the measuring stick
for all future campaigns - one I won't soon forget. I hope they had as much fun playing as
I had watching.
Mar. 1999: Well, the second session started on a down note, as the squad lost in
the final game to a very determined Southwick team. The third session started very
ominously, with a rematch against Southwick (who had added several high calibre
players). Commitments and such seem to keep us from putting our full squad on the
field for any measure of time - though the last game was a pretty good showing in a win
against a Northampton squad. But, as we went 13-7-1 (including a first and second
place session finish and a 1-1 record in session playoff games), I have nothing to
complain about. All the teams have improved measurable (one at our squads expense)
and brought the competition level back up. Holyoke Sexton squad (who we'd edged out
in the championship game to finish off the first session) is back - and with a
vengence. Even though we are not in the running for it, the last streach should
prove entertaining on the way to the finals.
Jan. 1999: As the New Year starts off, the squad is ready to defend its tittle from
the fist session. We say farewell to John and Mike Marvel, Seamus Cullen, and Zack
Duprey - all who have other commitments to attend to. To fill in the roster spots,
the squad has "resigned" a veteran from the Games-n-Lanes runner-up squad,
and added several promising new players.
This session should be very challenging, as in addition to
Westfield, Holyoke (Sexton), and what should be a much improved Omni FC team, Southwick
and Amherst ave joined the mix.
Dec. 1998: Valley SC won the clubs 2nd Session
Championship - and the first for this particular team - beating Holyoke (Sexton) 5-4 on a
goal in the sudden death overtime session. It was a very entertaining game, with
Holyoke having tied the game with under 2 minutes to go in regulation. The entire
squad put in 55 minutes of great play - capped off by Kevin Kelly's performance in goal,
and Adam Eckerts game winner.
